ECONOMY

The economy remains the single most important issue facing not only Wake County but the Nation as a whole. In the past when America was suffering, it was local people and local governments who pulled themselves up by their bootstraps to move this Country forward. I see my role as Wake County’s newest Commissioner to bring about just that kind of energy.  Like the majority of Wake County citizens I realize that the economy is our greatest concern. Unlike some who have been on the County Commission for years, my plan is to take a pro-active role in recruiting and building businesses from EVERY aspect of the economic spectrum, from manufacturing to financial services and beyond.  I want Wake County to take a leadership role in providing a full service work force to broaden our appeal for future growth.

TAXES

The conservative majority on the  County Commission has worked hard in the last two years maintaining the current property tax rates.  Some on the Commission have indicated an interest in increasing a number of taxes, (property and vehcile registration) earmarked for light rail proposals and other special interest items. I oppose any form of tax increase during these tough economic times.  The spectre of tax increases will discourage new business formation, slow economic growth further,  and will deter companies looking to relocate here.  As a taxpaying citizen, I am proud to support the services our County Government provides including  Education and Public Safety.  I clearly recognize the responsibility that government has towards its citizens and it must have the resources to provide those services.

PUBLIC  SAFETY

The Wake County Sherriff’s department under Sherriff Donnie Harrison is to be commended for its outstanding services in regards public safety and judicial services. As a citizen I have been a fan of the Sherrif’s responsible requests for budgets to help maintain law and order in Wake County.  Citizens’ expectations for public safety and civil preparedness are rising, at the same time the need to tighten budgets and to have broader oversight is increasing. The ever present budget pressures drive you to do more with less. Public safety is too critical to compromise. I will be an advocate for our deputies, police, firefighters and all first responders so that they continue to respond in real time, protecting our citizens and property. Public safety isn’t just about having enough first responders to aid us when the needs arise…it’s also about taking care of the Deputies, Police, Fire and other county employees who take care of us every day. Our law enforcement officers need to have the tools that allow them to fight the growing gangs and drug issues. We need to ensure that our first responders keep pace with our population with the continued addition of satellite police stations. I will work closely with our first responders to ensure that we capture all unmet and future needs of public safety.
